Country vs. City

Throughout life, every person has to decide where they want to live; whether it is in the deep country or in the big city is where some people have disagreements. Why do some people prefer to reside out in the open country side, while others wish to spend a lifetime in the busy cities. What differences between the two places attract people to move there and continue their lives in that region? Each location has its advantages and disadvantages, and therefore it is at the discretion of the person to choose where they would prefer to live.

In the country side, the populations are fewer than cities, so families and homes are spread out throughout the lands (Adams, Koepp, VanDrasek). The nearest towns and neighbors could be as close as a hundred miles away. The distance between the homes ensures peace and quiet, but also leads to loneliness. Because of the spread out homes, neighbors are extremely friendly and always glad to offer a helping hand.

Work is close to home though; farmers make a living off of their crops and animals. Freshly picked fruits and vegetables are always a reward after a long day of hard work. Raising animals for sale, like cattle, pigs, and chickens, also adds to the families’ incomes.

Most of the families that live in the country own many animals. The large farms allow for horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, cats, dogs, birds, and any other animals the families are willing to take care of. Horseback riding is also a very popular activity among the men, women, and children. Practicing balance skills while on a long stroll through the woods or on a race with friends is always fun.

Very few crimes are committed within the country. The majority of the crimes are usually only misdemeanors, and can be repaid with simple community service hours. Crime rates are very low and in turn, the people seem to be more calm and live less stressful lives.

Finally, the pace of living is extremely manageable. Life in the country is laid back, and requires no time limits. Any day can be spent as a leisure day, just to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the rolling hills, and at night time, the clear glimmering skies.

Life in the city is much more busy. Homes are so close together that they are almost to the point of sitting on top of each other. Some families barely have a side yard or back yard for the children and pets to play in. Whenever there are gatherings at nearby homes, all of the neighbors can hear the commotion. Neighborhoods, in contrast to the spread out country homes, are not tightly knit. Although many folks live in apartment complexes and condos, people mainly keep to themselves and never take the time to meet their neighbors.

Most of the work places can be found in the central or down town city areas, which are only a few minutes away from home. Usually the cities are very compact and all the buildings are next to each other, which makes it easy for anyone to simply walk from one place to another. Unfortunately, due to all of the industrialization and technological advances in the city, there is much pollution throughout the air supply (SOURCE). Some cities, like Los Angeles for example, have such an extreme amount of smog polluting the air, that the sky is always covered with a haze making it impossible to see the stars at night time (Mittelstaedt).

Unlike the country, jobs in the city require at the least, a high school education, if not a college degree. Education is one of the most important tools, and therefore there are many public and private schools available in every city. The life of a child growing up in the city is put into a timeline from Kindergarten all the way through college, to ensure that they will have the opportunity to earn a degree and get a good job.

In contrast to the seemingly easy life of a country person, in the city there is a much higher crime rate, and much more paranoia among the hearts of the people. Not only are there many more criminals, but also many more opportunities for crime. In addition, crime cannot be found only on the streets, but also in the homes, on the televisions of millions of viewers.

Life in the big cities is always busy and never boring. Fast-paced living is a necessity for survival and the path to personal growth is always open and welcomed by all. Either location, country or city, has its advantages and disadvantages. Where you live, is not just a place, but an entire lifestyle. Whether it is clear blue skies and green hills, or small compact cities with many buildings and skyscrapers, the decision is left to whomever it may concern.
